test light
Every once in a while someone will ask me what tool should i buy first. besides the owners manual i say get a good test light, with a good cord.
here are a few examples of good, bad, and different.  @ left is a cheapie, works but for a few bucks more you can buy proffesional quality like my favorite at bottom. the other two i would put in the specialty tools section and i wouldnt recommend unless you work on real odd vehicles. several nice features to each but all do the same basic function, light up with 12v. the coily cable one is my favorite cause its cheap and reliable. Go ahead and ask wtf does that mean. cheap as in under 25.00 and bulb doesnt blow out easily.  instead of a regular bulb it uses a tube bulb which is resistant to shock. the light all the way to the right obviously is used for hard to reach areas. and lastly one of the stranger test ligts out there is the one on top. instead of grounding you supply + and - battery(note cig lighter attachment)  the test light on top is used when you are back probing and dont know if there is power or ground present. that light will let you know. the cheapie is a pepboys light coily corded is Mac tools ETJ151SKD longreach is Mac ET122 smart light is Mac ET120 all do 6/12v systems except ET120 which does 6/12/24v systems.

any test light is better than none......
a digital multimeter is better....... ac dc ohms and continuity tester all in one... made by fluke...  LD

one more trick up my sleeve (ok got one more but im holding back)
this is a continuity tester/spark tester/test light combo  touch tips together and it lights up and beeps loud  good for finding broken wires as long as ends can reach circuit ends. not recommended for most but for pros who need fast easy hookup this is it. edit: want to add its made by snap on model #MT270

quick note about testlights...before using, touch B+ and - to make sure it works. you might be wasting alot of time if bulb is burnt out.

Good advise there Lagerdrinker especially the note about testing the test light. You might also want to mention to the folks with thing like that new fangled fuel injection, not to probe related wires with the pcm or ignition modules hooked up. That can get expensive.
I have the cheapy test light you have pictured (pep boys) since 1967. It was one of my first tool purchases. The bulb is a common bulb. Had a snap on light for a while but the only place you could get a replacement bulb was from snap on and the bulb cost more than my cheapy light. Mutt
