Finally starting my seat and the finish

Since I had the day off and no swag from the swapmeet to install, I got off my ass and went across town to the leather place.

After thinking it over, I decided I didn't want that seam that a lot of folks put on their seats, I wanted the top to be smooth.

To do this, I traced out the shape on some project board, and used the cutout to make a shaping form out of wood.

I wet down the leather and fit it into the form, using a couple of clamps.

Used a hair dryer to get rid of most of the moisture around the edges and set the shape.

Pulled it from the form and fit it to the seat pan so it gets that curve.

Cut another peice for the bottom. Once the top is dry, I'll start tooling and punching holes for the stitching.

This is my first seat ever so feel free to critique, offer suggestions etc.

First hand made seat finished

Finished my first seat this past weekend, did a quick and dirty lace on it to see what it would look like on the pan.

A lot of thing went wrong including pounding down the areas that I should have left up and vice versa. Made more errors on the stain, the lacing etc etc but I learned a lot.

Wasn't sure if I was going to keep it but this seat is growing on me. It is pretty comfortable and is getting more so as it shapes up and gets broken in. Since I am going to keep it on the bike for a while, I went ahead and relaced it right (well... as right as I could with a couple of misplaced holes...)

On the bike
