How do I transfer information ?

I got a laptop i don't use that often but it has some useful and wanted stuff on it . how would i go about getting this info (pics, some utilities ) off of it and put it on my home computer ? I have thought about , with the pics, sending them one at a time to my email then opening them up and saving them on the home comp. but that would take so much time. there has to be an easier way. some software/hardware i got not really sure how to do that part. plz help this computer illiterate fool.

Do you use a router with a built-in switch at home that has a few ports on it so you can connect more than one machine?

What Operating System do you have on the laptop and the home PC?

i use windows xp on both. the router only has one port.

So can you only have one PC connected to the Internet at a time? Or is one using wireless...?

The reason I ask is that the fastest, easiest way to do this is to network the computers together and transfer the files with file sharing.

Your next best bet would be to burn the files to CD/DVD and move them that way.

Those options are free if you have the appropriate tools to do the job (a network in the first case; a CD/DVD burner in the second).

Your next options are either more complicated or are going to cost money. You'll need to go to Best Buy (or similar) to pick up a cross-over cable to directly connect the machines to each other, or - even better - get an external hard drive or USB flash drive. Either of those can become very useful even after you've transferred your files.

the laptop is running wireless thru my cellphone provider. i'll try copying it to a disc and see what happens. thx for your input and help.

I'm betting that laptop has a network jack on it as well. The cross over cable method would work in that case.

USB flash drives are fairly cheap....handy to have for transfering info to multiple locations or pc's.....

I agree, the external HDD works excellent for that stuff. Lots of space, plenty to backup your entire disk. (If you bought one that's big enough.) Plug and play action etc etc. Best money i ever spent.

If you put it in a CD/DVD, you have a hard copy in case of HDD failure in the future.
