Any truck drivers in here?

I'm planning on going to school for my class A CDL with a Hazmat endorsement and getting a driving job.
Wondering if anyone here knows any good companies in NW Oregon or SW Washington or the PAC NW in general to work for as a driver.
I know right out of school a local job will be tough to find and I'm prepared to go long haul for a while if I have to but I'll be looking for something close to home till I find something where I can be home as often as possible if not every night.
I'm 53 years old and have a good work history (24 years at my last job) but my trade is custom home construction related (cabinetry) and as all such jobs are at about 40%+ unemployment in my area it's time for a late in life career change.
I don't see my job coming back before my unemployment runs out and frankly after 35 years I'm ready for something different anyway.
I'm not interested in relocating,I have a nice place in rural SW WA on 5.5 acres with a stunning mountain view and only 7 years from being paid off,no way I'm moving.
Thanks for reading if you got this far,any advise, thoughts, ideas etc, gladly welcomed.

Just brainstormin' with you, Dean, but I'll sure keep my ears to the ground for you! I have a friend down here that has had a route (Portland to LA and back) for lots of years...leaves every Monday, home by Thursday...but I'll see if he knows of any daily routes up your way...

Thanks Suzie and nope, not unless the wife comes along too as that's her baby.
I'll have enough to deal with while learning the ropes anyhow so its' probably best I leave the dog at home.

Couple years back when the cattle market fell through I looked into selling off the herd, leasing out the pastures and meadows, and going long haul. I looked at a couple companies, each of which would pay for all training on the provision that you stay with them for at least two years. They both were hot to trot for drivers over the age of 50. The first year you were with an experienced driver, the second year on your own. There were no salary gaurantees, but their first year average was around $42,000, so they said. I don't know if that's still the case. I'll dig back through my files and see if I kept the info. I think one was US Express and the other JB Hunt, but not completely sure.

Thanks Mike, been looking on the net myself but there's nothing like getting it from the horses mouth about one place or another.
Recruiters talk a good line like car salesmen but if you really want to know the truth talk with the car buyer after they've had it a while.

Yeah most of the big companies have their own schools but expect you to sign a contract with them for 2 years.
I've heard some horror stories about going that route, especially about Werner trucking.
I'm going to a private school in Portland, close enough to be home every night while I'm going to school and I won't be locked into one company and at their mercy.
It's a nationally accredited school with lifetime job placement.
It's also the one the local state Worksource uses.
IITR Truck Driving School | Oregon, Washington, Idaho | Truck Driving Schools | CDL Training
I've also been going here to learn as much as I can about the industry.... Truckers Trucking Forum | Largest CDL Truck Driver Message Board - The Premiere Truck Driver Forum
I've been practicing some general knowledge testing here...... Crist CDL's Practice Exams - Free Online CDL Practice Exams
11 tests with 15 questions each,this morning I missed 3 out of 165 questions.

Expedited, same day or next day delivery. Many Hot Shots deliver to car dealers, oil drilling operations, military bases, high tech manufacturers, etc. Key phrase: Just-in-time. For instance, owning your own Ford 350 with goose-neck car carrier.
