Definitely a ride I want to do, but not with a large group, plus I would need a month or more to do it right.

I can't attest to the condition of Route 66 in the other states, but I've ridden it in Texas and New Mexico and can tell ya straight on you'd best be riding a dirt bike. Since I-40 was put through, the condition of 66 has become pit-a-ful. There are miles of it which is not much more than mud holes, sand traps, broken pavement, and sage brush. Best be wearin' an iron jock-strap. And those are the better sections I rode.
One section in New Mexico I rode, I was almost outta gas and stopped at a gas station. The man at the counter told me it had been weeks since his last delivery, so each day he'd been adding water to keep the pumps working. Fortunately I'd stocked up with octane capsuls and put a half dozen in the tank as I filled. She still spit-n-sputtered 'til I hit Albuquerque. And this was in July with temps reaching 120 degrees F in the shade.
