Tool Kit For The Road

With todays bikes, there are some things that you can repair on the road, but most things being electronic are best left to a professional. Below I'll try to give you some of the things that would be usefull for a tool kit for the road in case of a breakdown.

A multi tip screwdriver (2 in 1) phillips and regular on the tips.

Spark plug wrench.

Pair of vice grips 6"-8" Or Channel lock pliers.

Set of torx bits (just the bits) preferrably ones that will fit into the multi tip screwdriver handle.

A multi tool of allen keys.(6-10 piece set in one tool).

Small set of 6 point wrenches.

Small 3/8 drive socket set, if you have the room.

A 6'' adjustable wrench.

Tubeless tire repair kit with inflator.

Spare fuses.

Pair of cutting pliers (side cutters).

A length of plastic tubing for "borrowing" some gas.

A dozen or so nylon zip ties.

Electrical tape.

Some assorted bolts and nuts.

A few different size hose clamps.

A few feet of safety wire to get you home if a cable breaks.

Emergency repair barrel for the clutch cable(has 2 screws that clamp the cable for a temp repair).

A 12 volt test light.

A small flashlight that works.

Some rags to clean up with also a tiny spray can of WD40 to use as a hand cleaner or a lube.

Most important is a cell phone when you find out you can't fix it.

Sounds like a lot but will get you through some of the smaller break downs.

Budoldschool is an unknown quantity at this point
I have most of these. One thing I like to carry is a LED flashlight that you "shake" to charge. Keeps me from having to worry about batteries.

Anything that touches my bikes, goes in the saddle bag, except tq wrench. From 1/2 breaker bar to 1 1/2 socket. Oil, tyraps, duct tape, elec tape, wire nuts, wire, emergency belt, tire repair kit, ignition, assorted nuts, bolts and washers. flash light, air gauge, motrin, rubber hose, hose clamps, orginal oil adapter for filter, elec schematics, chunk of plastic to lock primary
3/8 & 1/4 rachets, wrenches, allen, torq bits. small channelocks, vice grips.
Service manual on long trips.

Should add a multi meter, I got a small test light now.
I don't believe in being a cell phone mechanic.

Texan is on a distinguished road
You forgot one of the most important... 10MM wrench.

Also, I've carried one of those "emergency" drive belt kits for 2 years now. Have never used it probably because I've got it with me.

in my years of riding ive found the things needed most are spare bulbs and a screwdriver. havent had any major breakdowns yet but i do have a small tool kit with most tools in your list. Hopefully i wont need to use it with the amount of time i put into maintanance of my bike.

Heya chopper.... don't forget a copper reducer fitting and some sheet metal screws......!

For round town runnin and day trips I keep the following in the tool bag.....
  • tire gauge
  • zip ties
  • el tape
  • safety wire
  • allens
  • a few wrenches (including a crescent ...screw the 10mm)
  • a good LED flashlight
  • multi-tool
For longer trips, I'll add
  • more wrenches
  • ratchet and sockets
  • vice grips
  • telescoping magnet
  • wire cutters & a roll a wire
  • spare pre-gapped plugs
  • extra fuel line and clamps
  • a spare shift peg (don't ask).
Also, one night my head-light and tail-light bulbs failed on the same ride home from work.... had to make two stops in 10 miles for bulbs....PITA. Now I also carry spare bulbs.

BTW, on longer trips, I typically have more luggage options to store the extra tools.

I dont carry tools when riding local. i have a couple tool kits 1 small one and one thats very complete. small one is for 50 mile trip which just includes bulbs and a few screwdrivers tape knife. big set is for basically leaving for where ever which when packing stuff for overnight ride isnt too bad.

BTW, im working on a small toolbag/cig/keys/phonebag possibly unlike anything youve seen before. i will post results but likely seen later in winter.

Only thing I add for long trips is service manual. Other than that the same. Break downs cane happen anywhere. I don't want to be walking wether its near home or out west.

I suppose you don't need to carry a volt reg around town. I do carry an ignition around town.

50 miles to me is local. I was 55 miles away today, just for work.

If you got small bags you are limited. I did fit quite a bit in a leather tool bag on my forks. You just got to be selective, like differant ends of the wrencgh differant sizes. With a bagger, I go open/bx wrenches, space is not an issue. I got one bag about 2/3-3/4 full of tools.

Also forgot in 1st list, snap ring pliers, cause I get some loose balls.
