A new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety indicates that motorcycles with antilock brakes versus those without are 37 percent less likely to be in fatal crashes


Some comments

Though I am inclined to believe ABS makes a bike safer, I don't think it can reduce fatalities that much. Rather, I think that riders who are concerned about safety (and possibly experienced enough to realize how much it helps you) and therefore also ride more carefully, are more likely to spring for ABS. That is just conjecture on my part, of course."

"The IIHS / HLDI seems to over-generalize its findings. What the data shows is that motorcycles equipped with ABS are in fewer crashes than the same models without ABS. IIHS would have you believe that superior collision avoidance due to ABS is the cause, but maybe ABS-equipped motorcycles are ridden less or in less-threatening environments. The data don't prove which possibilities explain the difference. Personally I hope it's true that ABS reduces crash involvement."

I think in time, ABS, will be standard on bikes. It will go through some evolutions and there will be hold outs, but this is the way technology works. I have never riden a bike with it though.

I'd pay for it if it was offered on a bike I was buying. Good for the spring and early fall rains when there's a lot of oil on the roads. I don't think I'd be 37% safer.

If I was buying a bike, I would probably say, put it in the loan. But doubt I would fork over a grand for my bike. Just the way I am.

I spent 5 days in intensive care because an asshole rear ended me in the middle of a turn. ABS wouldn't have helped but it sure as hell makes me more safety conscious.

We rides bikes, which are inherently dangerous, but if this makes them safer with no downside other then money, why not? As it becomes more standard, you would like to think it would become cheaper. Though being Harley...


When I bough my last vehicle, I made sure it hide side airbags.

I think all Road Glides should come with ABS. You know how those people are.
