Simpson sentenced to 15 years

LAS VEGAS -- A judge sentenced O.J. Simpson to 15 years in prison with possibility of parole in 6 to 8 years on 10 counts today. Most of the sentences run concurrently.
The 61-year-old former football star, who walked away a free man after a celebrated murder trial, left the courtroom somberly today, bound eventually for a Nevada state prison for a botched attempt to recover sports mementos and personal items from two collectibles peddlers.
Neither Simpson, who was acquitted of the 1994 slayings of his ex-wife and her friend in Los Angeles, nor his co-defendant and former golfing buddy, Clarence "C.J. Stewart, testified at trial. They were convicted Oct. 3 of 12 criminal charges, including kidnapping and armed robbery, and faced mandatory prison time -- a minimum of six years and up to life.
Clark County District Court Judge Jackie Glass gave Simpson credit for his 64 days already in custody.
Before sentencing Simpson apologized to the judge and said he didn't mean to steal from anybody when he tried to retrieve memorabilia.
He appeared ready to break down in tears as he told Judge Glass that he was "sorry and confused" before going into a rambling and emotional 5-minute declaration.
"I didn't want to steal anything from anyone ... I'm sorry, sorry," he said.
The judge rejected his apology and said, "It was much more than stupidity."
