Little help needed from guitar folks.

Jam, BigD, PQ, and any other guitar players on here.

I have recently began trying to play the guitar (note how I said TRYING).
I am playing something relatively easy for my first try, been trying to play One by Metallica. The intro I have down, but my problem is my lil fingers are a bitch to navigate the fret board, seems like when I open a string my other finger hits that string and makes it sound flat. Any suggestions from any of you would be greatly appreciated. Hooty why would you be trying to learn to play the guitar?? My youngest son needs somebody to jam with while he plays the drums, so dad was the likely candidate!

Probably gonna be asking for help on restringing this damn Gibson SG, just can"t seem to get the sound out of it that I can with the Strat. Hopefully it's the strings cause the SG is much easier to handle than the Strat although the fret board on the Strat is a lil more narrow which makes it a lil easier to navigate.

Come on, I know you all have some bad habits you can pass on to me, not looking to learn to read music, just looking for some bad habits from some knowledgable group of guitar players.

Trim your finger nails as short as possible. Keep practicing and if you're
still having problems you could try a Les Paul jr. The neck is quite a bit smaller.

When playing a bar chord and using the pinky finger two frets down only fret the top two notes of the chord.
That way you can make the stretch with the pinky and it sounds clean instead of trying to play the whole chord. Just don't play the other strings.

yeah a nice cheat is playing the strings you fret well, don't push on the strings no harder than nessacary produce the note..

yup keep at it, it seems as climbing a ladder to me, you learn some ,you go up some rungs, sometimes you'll get hung up, not think your getting anywhere, then you'll advance some more.. learn the barre chords and to switch back and forth, after that you'll own the neck.

Damn long intro on this song, hope I get it before I lose my hair! Good part of it is my son has been practicing everyday just so i'm not any better at it than he is, but hey whatever it takes.

Tried that lil tip Jam and that helps and it makes the fingers feel better also, no ridges in the fingers after practice. Good tip, guess you just gotta relax a lil bit.
