Yup.

Damn, son, you got an SG? That's one fine learner...! Aaron had an SG once for a while, and a Les Paul Studio. Those two have a fatter neck than a Strat.

A lighter gage of strings might ease the effort some. Just mic the high and low E strings and take that info to a music store, ask for a lighter set, and they'll fix you right up.

Dude, have fun, play even a little every day, and those calluses will come. Strength too.

Well it's my youngest sons guitar, so far in his possesion is 1, Squire Stratocaster (which is an awesome guitar) 2, Gibson SG Special Faded (all Mahogany) 3, Epiphone Hummingbird (from grandpa, about 20+ years old, still looks new). Not a bad list for a 12 yr old huh? I think he might be a bit spoiled???

So I have a few choices on what to play, but been leaning toward the Stratocaster, seems to fit me a bit better.

What's funny is the boy never practiced until I started practicing from vids on YouTube, now when I start to practice he comes out and practices with me, funny how that works huh?

Goshawks tip on trimming the nails is good, it helps you utilize the very tip of your fingers which will keep you from fat-fingering the open strings. Have a friggin' ball!
