Did a stupid, stupid thing...

Saturday, I had a ton of family stuff to do, but at mid-day, I got a shivery ride in for an hour or so. I pulled down my street, I couldn't resist going around the block one more time, and hammered it WOT. Right as I shut down to pull in, bike died.

Still rolling in the drive, I started up. Ran rough as hell for a few seconds. I'd been meaning to set up the idle a touch, so I grabbed a screwdriver... bike dead as a doornail. I fooled with the idle screw a bit. Bike would fire, sputter & die.

Then wouldn't fire. Dead.

OL tappin' her foot to leave, and me ready to slit my wrists for busting something with my WOT stunt.

Got home late last night... had to work all day today, stewed about it all the while. Got home, took the seat off, put the charger on, got ready to pull the plugs, and generally worry-wart around, not really knowing what to do.

Then it came to me... flipped on the key, looked at the gas gauge.

Flipped on reserve. Fired right up.

I'm so ashamed.

Anyone done similar stuff like this?

yep,
going down the road one day and did the same thing showing off. Bike sputtered a few times and died! Couldn't get it to start to save my life.
I was a few blocks from an auto parts store so a pushed it over there. thought I might have fouled the plugs so I went in and picked up a couple, borrowed a wrench and swapped 'em out. Still wouldn't start for nothing! While I was down there messing with the plugs, I noticed the petcock was in the off position!
Flipped it over and fired right up!!!!!

Rigid, I never thought of the dumb luck of running dry in my drive! Ha!

Ahh, you needed a new set of plugs anyway...

It wasn't on a bike, but when I was a kid in 1974 my Dad bought a brand new John Deere lawn tractor. He had a place with five acres. I remember the guys dropping his tractor off and him jumping on it like a kid with a new toy to mow the grass. He took off around the driveway, down the side yard, around to the farthest corner of the lot and BANG! Nothing. Dead as hell.

He was sure it blew up.

He called the dealer, they waited for the guys in the truck to get back and sent them right back to the house. They showed up and pushed that tractor all the way up from the back of the lot and onto the trailer.

THEN one of them asked if it had gas in it.

Nope. In my Dad's defense, he probably was right in assuming they should have delivered it with some gas in the tank.

I think that day I learned to always check for fuel FIRST.

At least you were home. I rode around with my petcock on RES for years without knowing until one day the bike wouldn't start up about 20 miles from home.
