Just got back from Taiwan.

Just got back from Taiwan. Left the hotel about 5:30 last night this time.

That place is freaking crowded with a large middle class. Scooters are the preferred travel method for the daily commute. Lane splitting is common, not sure it's legal. During peak travel there'll be 20-50 of 'em riding club tight weaving in and out of traffic.

Big ass billboards of a young tough guy sitting next to the new SYM scooter. You could never ride a motorcycle with a clutch through the towns. There are a few nice mountain roads that could be OK but scooters are definitely the way to go there.

I thought about renting a Harley to take up into the mountains but there wasn't any time.

The manufacturing facilities that I toured weren't geared toward Harley parts. More like Nissan Transmission and transaxle parts.

I'll open the reasons for my visit up for discussion. Hopefully this doesn't get moved to R&P because I don't have or want access to that.

My company has historically made small gears used in aftermarket automotive and small machines. That line became unprofitable.

We made these parts the last couple of years because work was pretty difficult to get but that's no longer the case. Korea and mainland China quoted the parts for us but even they won't make the parts for the current prices.

Our choices were to almost double the prices or find overseas vendors to make the parts at the current price levels.

I'm sure there are a few small shops in the US that can make these gears profitably at the current prices. I'm also certain that the gears would become unprofitable for them once they implemented the necessary quality control processes.

Our customers were notified that we are no longer going to make their parts in house. Several have asked us to re quote the parts to be profitable. We'll do that. Most have requested that we develop overseas suppliers to make their product. We'll supervise the suppliers and provide the warranty.

This trip was the initial meeting between our company and the Taiwanese vendors. The Taiwanese vendors could make this work because most of these shops do overflow work for companies like Dana Spicer. Their factories are designed for this size and quantity of work.

I explained what we want and why we want it. Some of that's changed after seeing how they control their quality.

Small lot manufacturing is pretty different there although within a few years I think it'll be about the same as here. We still have better manufacturing processes but only because we have larger manufacturing operations.

So that's it. The reasons behind my visit. I'd be interested in any opinions.

I am big on buying American. I also know its complicated. You would have to raise your rates, if they do buy it, they would have to raise there rates.

What chaps my rump roast, is paying big bucks for over seas products. Like $200 boots, from China.

Not steal your thread, but I am lazy. How was airport secruity on international flights?

I got in line for the scanner. Had my boots off. Was emptying my pockets, came from work, and realized I had my Kershaw knife. First reaction just throw in the carry on. Then I decided bad idea. I have had that knife for years, I did not want to get it thrown out. So I went all the way back to my truck. Went through the line all over again.

They took my bag aside. Asked what was in there. Said lots of wire usually sets it off. I said I got my meter in there, showed him the bag, that had 3 jumper hanging off, and 2 sets of leads inside, one extra long. He kept looking. T

hen asked me if I had an air mattress. I said no, he keeps looking in this, small carrying on bag, saying air mattress usually set it off. They are calling my name on the loud speaker. I saw that me. Plane is leaving in 5 minutes. He then says, you best hurry. Asshole

Funny thing, 3 other times, same set up just fine. One time my boots got searched, maybe cause of the orthodic inserts.

So I ran, first time. Wrecking my foot, then inspecting gear the next day. Was having a bad week as it was, working on a ladder wiring the garage, then blowing snow.
