WTF??
Every new rider has to pay $200 to take a course and the state is worried it's going to lose money? They're also worrying that they don't know how to expand the course offerings to meet the increased demand.

I agree that you should have to pay for services rendered but if the state can't make money at $200 per student then it needs a lesson in fiscal responsibility. For profit organizations teach the same course here for the same amount. State sponsored courses are significantly less.

It doesn't affect me. I live in a different state and have had an M endorsement since the 70's.
A lot of states have requirements for driver's ed. I don't mind that requirement. I do think the state has a requirement to be fiscally responsible though. There's just been a couple of reports released stating that motorcycle education doesn't reduce motorcycle fatalities among new riders. Motorcycle deaths are inexplicably down. The most reasoned responses say it's because there are fewer new and inexperienced riders on the road. It seems an odd time for Connecticut to enact this law. Then they say they're going to need an extra hundred thousand per year to support it while charging students $200 to attend the state sponsored class.

It's strongly encouraged if not a requirement here in IL. I see cars full of 30 and 40 year olds with driver's ed rooftop lights on them here.

Nick's bill. Oh think of the children. One hand the class isn't a bad idea. On the other if you have been riding dirt, you may have a good handle of the bike. In MI you took the written, and then had to pass test. Which didn't seem so bad.
Either way $200 seems salty to me.

Texas: up to age 24 [as of 2/2010] Georgia: age 16- don't take the course, you have to wait until you're 17. [2007] Florida: up to age 18 Illinois: up to age 18 North Dakota: 14& 15 years old. I wouldn't consider it mandatory if it's based on age. If there is going to be mandatory driver ed for new motorcyclists then it should be mandatory for all new drivers to take a course. It's not and I wonder if this is a solution to lower fatalities, why hasn't all drivers required to take a mandatory class? K |

Right next door, Rhode Island MSF courses are state sponsored and required, and cost $100.00. The waiting list is so long we get several students per year at the school I teach at in Mass. who are willing to pay $289.00 to get it done sooner.
