Sputtering out problem...

My last 2 rides I have encountered a slight problem. The bike seems to be cutting out for no apparent reason.

It's running fine when I'm cruising and accelerates good but now when I come to a stop the bike sputters & dies out. Not every time it seems quite random. Today when it happened when I tried to restart it would pop and try to get going but it would take a few tries to get it going again.

I got home and let the bike sit at and idle and the idle would fluctuate and then suddenly cut out. With a few tries it would restart and idle again.

Has anyone had this problem? I would like to get some feedback before I start to tear apart the carb & fuel system.

Maybe a torn diaphragm in the petcock? Dirt in the low speed jet? Dirt in the petcock strainer? All of these could do that and are easy to check.

It does sound like a carb problem, do you have a CV on it, I am really good with the CV's.....

It's got the stock cv but I rejetted a year ago but I'm not sure what I put in it I think it was a 45/180 jets.

My first impressions is some type of clog in the system, but if it's a clog shouldn't it be harder to restart?

I feel it's something in the carb like a sticking float or jet.

Two things I would try is running it in the reserve position to see if it makes a difference. If it does it might be a problem with the petcock, like dirt in the screen.

Second I would get the engine hot and turn off the gas and run the carb dry while your twisting the throttle. If it is dirt in the carb that might suck it through.

Or take the air cleaner off and palm the carb. Vacuum sucks stuff out of the carb. Well I guess that's three thing to try.

All guesses but maybe one of us will mention something you didn't think of. Good luck.

I had similar issue a while back. It was a bad petcock. Replaced with a cheap chrome high flo one from rob's cycle supply (ebay) for 15.00

Check out your fuel filter and flow. Take off the fuel line at the carb, stick the end in a can and turn the petcock on to see if if flows.
If it's getting to the carb it could be dirt in the float.
If it only happens when the bike is hot it could be a vent issue (or lack thereof). Take your gas cap off and see if it happens then.
Also, make sure you fuel line is not next to anything hot, without insulation around it.
