Aligning TC Oil Pump
The best way to align oil pumps is using the tapered pins that align the pump to the opening. If the tapered pins are not available it can be done this way with the bike on a lift.
With out the tapered tools you install all 4 oil pump bolts, very lightly seat them, then rotate the motor using the rear wheel, trans in 5th or 6th depending on year, spark plugs out, rotate the rear wheel 2 or 3 times, snug bolts a little more, turn the wheel 2 or 3 more times, tighten more, turn more, tighten more, until you get to final torque on the oil pump/cam plate.

I like to just use the rear wheel method, works for me. No need for the pins.

I did it with pins and rotating wheel. From the manual and different sources, I wasn't sure if I still had to rotate the engine, if using the pins. but since I am anal, I did it any way.

Hi guys, this is my first post and maybe this has been covered before.
I installed a 97 ci S&S kit on a 2005 Low Rider. I also installed Adjustable push rods. After playing with it for about 100 miles I still had a knock on the front cylinder. After talking to a few people I heard I might have a lifter not pumping up. So I just got done installing new lifters as well as a set of 211 Screaming Eagle Cams. I soaked the the lifters in an oil bath for about 45 minutes. The one thing I noticed after adjusting the rods, I did not have to wait to be able to turn them By hand. Is this because they are new lifters and they have not pumped up yet? Also, at idle, my oil light comes on. If I rev the motor to about 1000-1200 rpms the light goes off. Could I have the pump out of alignment or do I just need to allow the lifters to pump up? Thank you for any help you can give. Last edited by Raven1776; 07-09-2011 at 01:23 AM. |

oil shouldn't be on at all, start looking at your pump alignment and check pressure.. light should go out immediately..

The bike was doing this before I ever messed with the cams and lifters. The oil light would come on at idle. Rev the motor to about 1000 rpms and the light would go off. Ride it until the bike was good and warm and the light would stay off.

I got the bike to normal op temp. Oil light stays out now. Took it for a ride this morning and I still have some valve train noise coming from the rods. I only have about 4 miles on the bike since I adjusted the rods and installed the new lifters. Anybody know how long it takes for the lifters to pump up?

Ya they pump up quick, but for those 1-2 seconds you are hoping you didn't mess up. Agree with Jams, get gauge on there. Could be a bad sensor, or bad oil pump. When the tensioners fail, I think they can take out the pump.
