Hey, a motorcycle thread!

The ol' Superglide turn 12 this year, giving me 50k trouble-free miles so far; and want to keep it that way. (Dammit- the owner's pushin' 12 x 5...) So, I'm going to ratchet up the service this year. She needs - and will get - more attention this winter.

- new belt

- Pingel petcock, closing off the POS vacuum shutoff

-back tire

-brakes all round (rears are original)

-swingarm off for a bearing look-see

-motor mount issue with vibration

-trees off for a bearing look-see.

-black booger club polish job (including for thisyear the inner primary)

-clutch cable

-whatever crops up

~~

You folks know I like this old cheap ride shiny. I've been amazed at the tins finish- the House of kolor paint job has been bug-and-sandblasted for four years and looks amazing. But the frame does NOT. 12 years of road rash has dulled 'er up some. This bike ain't worth a strip to repaint, but as it'll be partially apart, I'll try to rub out the visible areas.

Lots of little things, too. The pivot pins and bushings on the hand controls are wearing sloppy; that's a cheap and rewarding fix. I noticed the clevis pin on my rear brake linkage was worn.

Stuff like that.

~~

I do most all my own maintainence myself. I've owned this bike 7 years. The jack I've used for these last six winters has been borrowed off of brother Fishbone. Six years ago, Fish had just taken delivery on a spankin' new Heritage. Three years later? He had a spankin' new Road King. Always under warranty. Now? He's out of warranty, and he needs his OWN JACK! DAMMIT man!

Santa's li'l Chinese elves from Harbour Freight stepped in, and now I have my own!

You Da man Dave,my old axe turns 12 on 1/15/12 but I'm just too damn lazy I guess to get into all that work lol.
She's showing her age at 168,000 miles but still gets me down the road.
When I rode her away from the dealer that rainy January day in 2000 I figured I'd keep her 5 years, sure didn't work out that way.
I also figured I'd be retiring from a cabinet shop but that ain't happen'n either lol, sure never thought I'd be drive'n a truck and still riding the same bike in 2012 but here I am.
Keep up the good work man, you've got a sweet ride there my friend.
Happy New Year!

Well, looking at the motor mount vibration problem, outlined in this thread-

http://www.bikershangout.com/forums/...vibration.html

I supported the engine and walked thru the steps indicated. Here's what this dude found:

Mine pulled away less than .010". Kind of indicates it's motor mount rubber failure. I HATE rubber failure.

I'm thinkin' this winter is gonna get expensive...
