1,000 mi service story

My FLSTCI went in for 1,000 mile service. Went in as a Heritage; came out as a Fat Boy as judged by the air filter cover that was stuck back on. Dealer's wrench boys switched it.

Bought a luggage rack that bolts to the bar with 4 screws. I just told them to put it on while the bike was in the shop, after buying the rack while dropping the bike off. The total bill included a full hour labor (minimal charge) just to put the rack with its 4 screws on, even though, I'm in for a $300 oil change which is mostly what the 1,000 mile service consists of.

Won't be back there again. Have since found an independent mechanic with about the same hourly charge, but has only 2 employees plus the boss, and no timber-framed, cut-stone building he has to pay for.

OUCh My first oil change was pricey but my second was much cheaper at the 8000km mark as i didi it myself and recorded it.
I mounted my own luggage rack and it was a PITA to do..off came the bags and then the sissy bar as the bottom 2 bolts are too low to get at without removing it from the bike. i could see an hour but they should cut some slack. I buy most of my stuff from Zanotti's in the US and they ship to me USPS way cheaper than HD dealers up here!

I drive for the MOCO and get to see a lot of dealerships. In the spring they are all real busy because everybody seems to think they are the only ones needing service just before the riding season. If there is something you need done that you could possibly do yourself, you should just do it. There are resources on the web, and just asking a tech at the dealer could give you enough info to do the job yourself. If it's something you need a tech to do, be patient because lots of people wait till the last minute to get stuff done.

I don't know what is involved with a harley first service ,but I hear the same misconception from my Honda customers .They think that the F/S is just an oil change but there is usually a lot more being done.If you have a reputable dealer you can ask them for a list of things preformed at the F/S to justify the charges. I have also heard of dealers jamming it up the customers ass on thier services
