Mosin Nagant
Originally made by Russia. Then tons of other folks. 7.62x54, not the 7.72x39, used in AK-47.
Few different models. For most part seems long and carbine. I think mine was made in Romania, carbine. Bayonet is fitted into it stock, so I think M44. The Romians are sorta rare, not that really accounts for much. Bought it 10 years ago, to have in the garage. Something I didn't care about, for what ever should up out in the country. Loudest and hardest kicking gun, I ever fired. Steel butt plate and carbine, probably why. I didn't know at the time, military surplus ammo of that time is corrosive. Never cleaned it. I can see some bore rust. They have a rep for being tremendously reliable. So I was bummed when my trigger went limp with less then 1o shots. 8 years later, take apart, and figured out it was just a loose screw. Simply built gun, easy to take apart.

They are good rifles. 7.62x54 is a great cartridge.

I remember the first time I fired it, you could hear it echoing. Kicks like a mule too.

I didn't know they were still making them in 1955. Mine's Russian, 1932.

Haven't fired that gun since 03. Its a hoot. I put a winter jacket and sweatshirt on. First time was summer, the steel butt plate left a bruise.
Trigger went limp, I was moving, and it got packed away. Then I read up on it, and its got a following. So I read how to take it a part. Its pretty easy. Its emphazied that this is built for soldiers in combat. Screw was loose for the trigger. I have read to put locktite on it. Then I lost the trigger pin, cleaning it. Got a new one off ebay tonight. $7 shipped. Tons of parts for these. GF was not excited about me firing it off the patio. Nice flash. Need to find a place for cheap surplus ammo. 30 cal is big round, but military rounds are not the best for hunting. I am getting into these surplus guns. Fun researching where they were made. I may look for the long version, for long range shooting. The carbine is nice length. I had read about it having a gritty trigger pull, and read one article about sanding. I thought this one pull smooth. Atleast to my abilities. Being its a 1955 and they started in 1891, it may be a little better.

Simo Häyhä (Finnish pronunciation: [ˈsimɔ ˈhæy̯hæ]) (December 17, 1905 – April 1, 2002), nicknamed "White Death" (Russian: Белая смерть, Belaya Smert; Finnish: valkoinen kuolema; Swedish: den vita döden) by the Red Army, was a Finnish sniper. Using a modified Mosin–Nagant in the Winter War, he has the highest recorded number of confirmed sniper kills – 505 – in any major war.[2]
During the Winter War (1939–1940), between Finland and the Soviet Union, he began his duty as a sniper and fought for the Finnish Army against the Red Army. In temperatures between −40 and −20 degrees Celsius, dressed completely in white camouflage, Häyhä was credited with 505 confirmed kills of Soviet soldiers Besides his sniper kills, Häyhä was also credited with over 200 kills with a Suomi KP/-31 submachine gun.[4] Remarkably, all of Häyhä's kills were accomplished in fewer than 100 days at a time of year with very short hours of daylight.[5][6][7] He also kept snow in his mouth, so that the vapor of his breath would not give him away.[citation needed]

I prefer the Mac-90, Chinese made, 30-round banana clip. Accurate fucker. It will fire packed with snow, mud, after lying in a creek bed after a week, etc. Easy to break down and clean, if'n ya have a mind to clean it. Have a few thousand rounds of Russian ammo for mine. Only problem with the ammo is the mercury content, which causes residue buildup in the barrel. Great hog killer!

As for sniper work............I didn't keep snow in my mouth. I focussed on my heart beat, lowering it to improve my shots. I've gotten my heart beat under forty beats per minute prior to shots.
