Reloading

Trying to get into reloading. In 2000 I bought a Lee 3 stage?, auto indexing, reloader and auto powder measurer.

I got the bullet depth right but could not figure out how to crimp. Being that I had .357 revolver rounds, sounds like I didn't need to worry about that.

Back then you didn't have you tube to watch, and I didn't know anyone who reloaded. Shortly after I moved, and it got packed away for 10 years.

Most of it was packed away in the basement in containers, but the press was in the barn. Some surface rust on the dies and press. But I think they are ok.

Lee is made near me and there is store near the factory, though I think they are independent.

I orginally bought 500 cases& bullets, and 1000 primers. With the prices, I probably did better then the stock market. Plus I saved all my brass.

Eventaully I want to get into rifle load. I think just just shooting a few rounds before the season, is not enough.

I have been reloading for a while now. You will be surprised how much you have to spend to save money at it. If you dont shoot alot then it is cheaper to buy factory ammo. I also cast my own lead bullets. I can load .44 mag for about 13 cents per round.

I am thinking since I have new brass, bullets and primers, I might as well do those 500 rounds. The only thing I need is powder.

After that I need to look into cleaning brass and trimming it. Maybe at the point it may not be economical. I am going to buy a new caliper, as the one I had has been banged around the garage. But that can be used for other stuff.

But I would like to use the supplies I bought 10 years ago, and atleast learn how to do it. At the time I had it pretty much set up, but don't remember it all now.

Just looking on line for prices, didn't see as much for .44spcl. .44 mag is obviouly a more popular round. I bough the gun for carry, and some shooting. But at 3" it was the perfect gun for either application. So I ended up buying a snobnose. But still like the .44.

DO NOT load all of your brass at once. experiment with different powders and bullet weights/designs before you settle on a load to mass produce.

Sound advice.

Zerk. Don't worry too much about crimp but make sure you size all the rounds properly. Don't put any bigger bellmouth on the case than necessary to seat the bullet straight.

The bullet seater and crimp happen in the same die usually. You need a 4 station press to use a separate crimp die and then you need to buy the separate crimp die.

Just take a sized but not bellmouthed case and set it in the shell holder under the bullet seater die. Run the die down until you can feel it rubbing on the case. Lock the die there and adjust the seater to give you the right cartridge overall length.

.
I see they make conversions to go from 3 to 4. Why would I want to?

I do want to do rifles, which feed, reason to go to 4?
I could seeing doing semi autos some day, would there be a reason there?

10 years ago I got into this put some time into reading. Got the 47th additon of Lymans reloading manual. Then it got packed away, and moved 4 times.

I also have a hand reloader, my dad used a little bit.

Already made one mistake. I went to buy powder, forgetting how many different types there are and how they very per load.

Guy behind the counter recommended H110. Which is used for 156 grn .357, I have 125. Though I probably will get some some day.

I did notice the H110 is used for .44 mag, so unless I want my $25 to go to waste, I'll have to get a .44 mag.

Went to places looking .44 spcl, found one box of 20 $$ defensive loads.

Going to work on setting up a shooting range tomorrow. I put a fence up around the back yard for the dogs, so I don't like to shoot alot off the patio.

There is another spot away from the house a bit I think would be good. I got my 4 wheeler running, which makes a good bench and shooting rest. Though I have thought about building one someday.

If we get some mild weather, or spring, can do some shooting here, and grill brats.

Terry-I still got your .357s.

You are right. I set up a spreadsheet to calculate costs. Then got some quick #s from Cabelas on 100 round lots. Its about the same or a little more. Granted I can probably get cheaper.

You don't really save any money on brass until you get to 1000. Though you can reuse brass. So I suppose that is where the savings comes from. Reusing the brass saves about $10/50 for .357.

I already have the press, and one set of dies, so I might as well do it. Plus save my brass.
