About 10 years ago I went black bear hunting in Idaho with a couple guys. We were in the middle of nowhere. 30 miles from any road. Had to have a bush pilot fly us in. Right on the Selway River. The guys would laugh at me when I'd strap my .44 mag on to go in the woods to take a shit. They thought just because it was black bear country you didn't need a sidearm. I was taught its better to be safe than sorry and I had promised my new wife that I would make it home in the same shape I left.

About two weeks after we left there was a group of boyscouts in the same area camping. A big black bear came into camp, drug a kid out of his tent and killed his ass.

If you are just worried about dogs and your in black bear country .357 mag would be perfect. Again I wouldn't hunt a black bear with .357 mag even though plenty of them have been taken with that caliber. Its a great caliber with great penetration but doesn't have that bone breaking power that the .44 mag has. Anytime your hunting a predator like a bear breaking a major bone like the front shoulder is how you stop a charge.

It is also an excuse to buy a gun. Though money is still an issue. I really like my S&W 586 .357, 6", L frame. Just a great feeling gun compared to some of the .44s I have held.

I was talking to an Indian in the Yukon, who owned the bar and motel I was staying at. He did not like or trust black bears. I mean he didn't personally like them.

He told of how when he was a kid, and they bringing fish in, his grandma would through a grizzly or brown, I don't remember which, a fish, and it would leave them alone. But he said you couldn't trust black bears.

Saw bear shit in the driveway of thew camp. There area has alot, I should have a good chance at getting a tag.
