CO- no motorcycle checkpoints
No Motorcycle-Only Checkpoints Planned For Colorado | Southwest Scooter News
No Motorcycle-Only Checkpoints Planned For Colorado Submitted by theboss on Sat, 03/05/2011 - 3:10pm. Colorado will apparently not be participating in the controversial motorcycle-only checkpoint program being pushed by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA). According to Heather Halpape, Safety Programs Public Relations Manager for the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the state has no plans in the works to implement motorcycle-only checkpoints. Rumors have run rampant since the announcement of the NHTSA plan to fund motorcycle-only “safety” checkpoints last fall, and the agency’s subsequent grant of $70,000 to the Georgia Department of Public Safety to launch motorcycle-only checkpoints there. “I spoke to Glenn Davis in CDOT’s Office of Transportation Safety, who confirmed that NHTSA region 8 has not solicited CDOT to participate in any motorcycle only checkpoints,” Halpape wrote via email February 23. “And, CDOT has not approached NHTSA region 8 about this type of project either, and does not intend to. CDOT works closely with NHTSA Region 8 on collaborating on motorcycle safety initiatives, but this has focused on education efforts such at the Live to Ride campaign. I hope this answers (the) question and puts to rest any rumors.” As first reported in Scooter News last autumn, NHSTA decided to fund the program despite being asked by members of congress to wait in starting until the merits of the program were explained. That request by Representative James Senenbrenner of Wisconsin and ten other members of the House fell on deaf ears, as NHTSA head David Strickland and his boss, Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, moved ahead with the checkpoint funding. “Not only is this an injustice to the motorcyclists of America, it is a complete waste of taxpayer money.” said Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs for the MRF. The NHTSA-designed plan calls for conducting motorcycle-only “safety checks” along roadsides. The constitutionally questionably checkpoints will be established when and wherever law enforcement agencies choose. Criteria of the alleged “safety checks” has not been made immediately clear, but was apparently spelled out in NHTSA’s request for applications from various agencies. |

I'd love to see an organized ride of 1,000 or more bikes, to specifically ride to a check point and over flow it...
